Ashmore Reef Lagoon South

Ashmore Reef, Coral Sea, Queensland, Australia

A lagoon dive in the Ashmore Reef Marine Park — one of the very few sites accessible under the park's Recreational Use Zone near West Island. Ashmore is mostly a Sanctuary Zone (scientific research only); historic hotspot for sea snakes (40,000 individuals / 13 species documented 1990s) though populations have declined significantly since 2003. Depths 3-25 m on lagoon bommies with remaining sea-snake encounters, schools of fusiliers, and frequent green turtle sightings. Very remote (630 km N of Broome); permit required; rarely-visited by recreational divers.
