Elphinstone Reef

Red Sea, Egypt

An offshore submerged reef 12 km off Marsa Alam, Egypt. Elongated reef (approximately 375 m long) oriented north-south with vertical walls dropping past 100 m on both sides and plateaus at the north and south ends at 25-40 m. Strong currents. Observed species include oceanic whitetip sharks (October-January peak), scalloped hammerheads (summer), thresher sharks, manta rays, and schooling barracuda. Advanced Open Water with drift experience required.
