Garajau Marine Reserve
Garajau, Madeira, Portugal
A Portuguese marine reserve on Funchal Bay, Madeira, established in 1986 — one of the Atlantic's earliest-established no-take areas. Stretches along 6 miles of coastline with depths 5-50 m. Known for large dusky grouper (Epinephelus marginatus) — individuals range from 40 cm to over 1 m, and the grouper population is a documented recovery success story for the species. Observed species also include barracuda, amberjack, tuna, rays, turtles, and moray eels. Suitable for Open Water through Advanced divers.
