Great Blue Hole
Lighthouse Reef Atoll, Belize
A 318 m wide, 124 m deep circular marine sinkhole at the centre of Lighthouse Reef Atoll — a UNESCO World Heritage component. Dive drops onto the rim at 10 m and descends past the stalactite ledge at 40 m (past sea level during the last Ice Age when the cave was dry). Reef sharks, Caribbean reef sharks, bull sharks, and lemon sharks circle the stalactites. Visibility is good but there is no life below the halocline at ~90 m (anoxic). Advanced certification and deep-diving experience essential.
