Jellyfish Lake (Ongeim'l Tketau)

Eil Malk Island, Rock Islands, Palau, Micronesia

A marine saltwater lake on Eil Malk Island in the Rock Islands Southern Lagoon of Palau. Connected to the ocean via fissures in the limestone, but isolated for long enough to evolve a distinct golden jellyfish (Mastigias papua etpisoni) population. Snorkel-only; scuba is prohibited to protect the ecosystem. Maximum depth 30 m (divers prohibited below 15 m). Jellyfish aggregate in the upper 5 m; peak numbers mid-morning as they follow the sun. Permit required.
