SS Léopoldville

Calvados, Normandy

A 160 m Belgian passenger liner converted as a WWII troop transport, torpedoed and sunk by German U-486 on Christmas Eve 1944 just 5 miles off Cherbourg — a tragic wreck where 808 American soldiers died. The wreck lies upright at 60 m depth and is almost intact with penetration possible for technical divers. Cold water (10-14°C); trimix + drysuit + wreck-penetration certification required. One of the most historically significant and technically demanding wrecks in Europe.
