SS Oregon

Long Island, New York

A 518-ft British Cunard passenger liner that sank in 1886 following a collision with a schooner approaching New York — at the time the fastest liner on the Atlantic (Blue Riband 1884). The wreck lies 18 miles south of Long Island at 40 m, with the engines and boilers (shallowest structure) at about 25 m. Decks have collapsed from brittle wrought-iron corrosion, exposing the engineering. Observed species include tautog, black sea bass, and schooling baitfish. Advanced certification required.
