Surprise lies on the mainland side of the Lembeh Strait at the northern edge of the Teluk Kembahu (TK) bay. The Batu Angus volcano rises behind it. A gentle black-sand slope carries patches of coral and sponge. Old lava flows have left shallow hollows that are filled with lettuce coral. The site was once called Mandarinfish City. Night divers have counted many mandarinfish here, along with bobtail squid. Older reports say the mandarinfish are fewer now. Flamboyant cuttlefish, coconut octopus, seahorses and ghost pipefish are all reported on the sand. Boats often use the calm bay as a lunch stop between dives. The exact position of this site has not been published, so the map pin shows only its approximate area.
