Ternate WWII Wrecks

Ternate Island, North Maluku, Indonesia

A group of WWII Japanese military wrecks around Ternate Island in North Maluku — the Japanese naval base at Kao Bay (Halmahera) and nearby Ternate/Tidore had significant military infrastructure during the Dutch East Indies campaign and later US operations. Multiple aircraft, tank, and vessel wrecks at depths 15-40 m, now heavily encrusted in soft coral. The region also hosts endemic Halmahera walking shark (Hemiscyllium halmahera) sightings, pygmy seahorses on the gorgonians, and schooling pelagics. Liveaboard access; Advanced certification recommended for the deeper wrecks.
