Natal Sergeant
Abudefduf natalensis
The Natal Sergeant is a species of damselfish that inhabits the tropical western Indian Ocean, including regions around Madagascar, Mauritius, Réunion, and the coastal areas of South Africa from KwaZulu-Natal to the Eastern Cape. This damselfish is typically found in rocky reefs at depths ranging from 1 to 25 meters. It can grow up to 17 cm in total length. The Natal Sergeant is characterized by its compressed body shape and distinctive coloration, which helps differentiate it from similar species like A. sexfasciatus, as it has one less dark bar on its sides. This species is known for its oviparous breeding behavior. During the breeding season, the Natal Sergeant forms distinct pairs, with males taking on the responsibility of guarding and aerating the eggs. The eggs are demersal, meaning they adhere to the substrate, providing some protection from predators. Divers encountering the Natal Sergeant can expect to see these fish actively swimming around rocky reefs. They are harmless to humans and are sometimes collected for commercial aquarium trade. The IUCN has assessed the Natal Sergeant as Least Concern.
