Night Sergeant
Abudefduf taurus
The Night Sergeant is a notable damselfish, reaching a maximum length of 25 cm. It features a robust, compressed body with a tawny yellow upper section and a lighter lower section. Its appearance is marked by five or six dark bars that are broader than the spaces between them, and sometimes a faint additional bar or a dark saddle-like mark can be seen on the upper part of the caudal peduncle. A distinct black spot is visible at the upper base of its pectoral fin. This species is found in the tropical and subtropical regions of the Atlantic Ocean, including areas off southern Florida, the Caribbean, Cape Verde, and the African coast from Senegal to Angola. It thrives in rocky inshore reef environments, particularly around wave-cut rock ledges and tide pools, typically inhabiting depths from 1 to 5 meters. The Night Sergeant mainly feeds on algae, but adults also consume Zoanthus and hydroids, while juveniles may eat copepods. During breeding, Night Sergeants form distinct pairs, with males taking responsibility for guarding and aerating the eggs attached to the substrate. Divers might encounter these fish in rocky reef settings, where they display territorial behavior. The IUCN lists the species as Least Concern.
