Toothed Decorator Crab

Acanthonyx dentatus

The toothed decorator crab is a small crustacean, reaching a size of up to 40 millimetres across. Its carapace has a teardrop shape with two forward-pointing spines between its eyes and two additional spines on the sides. Known for its excellent camouflage, this crab decorates itself with hydroids and seaweeds, which help it blend into its environment and provide a defense mechanism due to the stinging properties of hydroids and the chemical defenses of some seaweeds. The crab's color varies from bright pink-red to muted brown, especially noticeable after moulting. This species is distributed along the southern African coast, stretching from Cape Columbine to Richards Bay, and is also found in the Red Sea. It typically resides at depths reaching 43 metres, with most observations occurring in shallower waters. The toothed decorator crab often takes shelter among striped anemones, using the anemones' sticky threads for protection. Divers may need to look closely to spot this well-hidden species, making it an intriguing discovery for those with a keen eye.
