Hotlips Spider Crab

Achaeopsis spinulosa

The Hotlips Spider Crab, known for the vivid red markings around its mouth, is a small species of spider crab found exclusively along the South African coast, from False Bay to Durban. It resides in subtidal zones up to depths of 43 meters. This crab is characterized by its relatively long, sturdy legs and a rounded carapace that tapers to a blunt tip. Its pincers display a distinctive ragged pattern of white and red stripes. Divers may encounter this crab among striped anemones or perched on sea fans. It is adept at camouflage, often seen adorned with sponges, hydroids, or algae, which help it blend into its surroundings. The Hotlips Spider Crab is endemic to its region, making encounters outside this area unlikely. Divers should look for this cryptic creature in its preferred habitats, where it remains a rare sight due to its excellent camouflage abilities.
