Convict Cichlid
Amatitlania nigrofasciata
The convict cichlid (Amatitlania nigrofasciata), also known as the zebra cichlid, is a freshwater cichlid in the family Cichlidae. Adults reach about 15 cm with a laterally compressed body displaying grey to bluish coloration with 8-9 prominent black vertical bars, giving it a convict-like striped appearance. Females often show orange coloration on the belly. This species is native to freshwater streams, rivers, and lakes at depths of 0-5 meters in Central America from Guatemala to Honduras, with introduced populations in many regions worldwide. Convict cichlids are famously aggressive parents, forming monogamous pair bonds and fiercely guarding their eggs and fry. Both parents participate in nest defense, attacking intruders many times their own size. They are omnivorous, feeding on algae, insect larvae, and small invertebrates. Their bold behavior and dramatic parental care make them fascinating to observe in clear Central American rivers.
