Blackbanded Damsel
Amblypomacentrus breviceps
The Blackbanded Damsel is a small marine fish reaching up to 8.5 cm in length. It features a fusiform, compressed body typical of damselfishes, with distinct black bands that help in identifying it from similar species. This species is prevalent in the tropical waters of the western Pacific Ocean, including regions like the East Indies, Philippines, and Solomon Islands. Divers can encounter the Blackbanded Damsel in lagoon and coastal areas, typically at depths ranging from 2 to 35 meters. It prefers habitats with sandy or silty bottoms, often around rubble, rocks, or sponges. While adults are usually found alone or in small groups, juveniles may associate with anemones for protection. The species is oviparous, with distinct pairing during breeding. Males play a role in guarding and aerating the eggs, which are demersal and adhere to substrates like abandoned shells or waste bottles. The Blackbanded Damsel is categorized as Least Concern by the IUCN.
