Natal Spurfowl Wrasse
Anchichoerops natalensis
The natal wrasse (Anchichoerops natalensis) is a large, robust wrasse reaching up to 60 cm in length. Males are spectacularly colored with a deep blue-green head, orange body, and intricate facial markings, while females and juveniles display a more subdued brownish coloration. Endemic to the Indian Ocean coasts of South Africa and Mozambique, it inhabits rocky reefs and kelp-lined areas at depths of 5 to 40 meters. This species is a protogynous hermaphrodite, with dominant females transforming into colorful males. It feeds on sea urchins, crabs, and shellfish, using its strong jaws to crush hard-shelled prey. As a game fish and dive attraction along the South African coastline, it is popular with both anglers and underwater photographers. Its bold colors and approachable behavior on rocky reefs make it a highlight of temperate South African diving.
