Reticulated Hawaiian Hermit Crab

Aniculus hopperae

The Reticulated Hawaiian Hermit Crab, known scientifically as Aniculus hopperae, is a medium-sized hermit crab distinguished by its red coloration and unique black 'bracelets' on its scissor arms. Its eyestalks are bright orange, and it features a web-like white pattern across its body, making it easily distinguishable from similar species like Aniculus simbogae, which lacks these specific markings. The holotype specimen from Oahu, Hawaii, measures 6.3 mm in shield length. This species is distributed across several Pacific localities, including Hawaii, the Line Islands, Marquesas Islands, and Clipperton Island. It predominantly inhabits rocky coastlines, often seeking shelter under small outcroppings and within caves. In Hawaiian waters, the Reticulated Hawaiian Hermit Crab can be found at depths of up to 23 meters, although it has been recorded at depths ranging from 1 to 38 meters.
