Black Cardinalfish

Apogonichthyoides melas

The Black Cardinalfish, known scientifically as Apogonichthyoides melas, is a small reef-associated fish found primarily in the Western Pacific region. It inhabits tropical waters ranging from Malaysia to the Moluccas, extending north to the Ryukyu Islands and south to Rowley Shoals. This species is also reported in New Caledonia. Divers can spot these fish in shallow, well-protected coastal bays, often hiding under jetties or among branching corals and rocky inshore areas. The Black Cardinalfish can grow up to 10 cm in length and has a compressed body shape with distinct dorsal and anal spines. It is a mouthbrooding species, with distinct pairing observed during courtship and spawning. This behavior is common among cardinalfish, where males typically take on the role of mouthbrooding the eggs. Divers encountering the Black Cardinalfish will find them in depths ranging from 1 to 15 meters. They are harmless to humans and are categorized as Least Concern by the IUCN. These fish are often found in dark, sheltered areas, making them a bit challenging to spot unless divers are specifically looking for them.
