Sharpsnout Snake Eel

Apterichtus klazingai

The sharpsnout snake eel is an intriguing marine species belonging to the family Ophichthidae. It is recognized for its elongated, eel-like body and a pointed snout that aids in burrowing into sandy substrates. Its coloration is light tan with fine brown spots concentrated on the head and throat, and it lacks fins entirely, which distinguishes it from other eel species. This species can grow up to 45.5 cm in length. The sharpsnout snake eel inhabits the tropical waters of the Indo-Western Pacific, ranging from East Africa to the Marshall Islands, and has been reported in the Hawaiian Islands and Marquesas. It prefers sandy-bottom habitats where it can form congregations and burrow using its snout or sharp tail. Divers are likely to encounter this eel at depths between 10 and 25 meters, although it can be found as deep as 120 meters. Its diet primarily consists of crustaceans like crabs and shrimp, as well as small bony fish. The sharpsnout snake eel is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.
