Peppered Sole

Aseraggodes lenisquamis

The Peppered Sole is a small reef fish found in the subtropical waters of the Southwestern Pacific, particularly around New South Wales, Australia. It is a demersal species, typically residing at depths between 4 and 10 meters. The fish has a distinctive light brown coloration with scattered small dark brown blotches, and its fins are adorned with small dark brown spots. The body is characterized by a short and deep shape, with a rounded caudal fin. The dorsal and anal fins have branched rays, and the lateral line is aligned with the upper eye, which overlaps the lower eye. This species is known for its unique morphology, featuring numerous cirri on the ventral part of the head and along the opercular edge of the gill opening. The Peppered Sole is often found in sandy-bottom habitats in bays, where it blends into its environment. Its cryptic appearance allows it to avoid predators and ambush prey effectively. The Peppered Sole is considered harmless to humans and has not been evaluated for CITES or CMS listings.
