Astreopora randalli

Astreopora randalli is a coral species belonging to the family Acroporidae, commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region. This coral is typically associated with shallow reef habitats, thriving at depths ranging from 5 to 15 meters. It is part of the diverse reef ecosystems that stretch between 28°N and 25°S latitude and 95°E to 135°W longitude. The life cycle of Astreopora randalli involves a unique reproductive process. As a member of the class Anthozoa, this coral can be either gonochoric or hermaphroditic. Mature gametes are released into the coelenteron and subsequently spawned through the mouth. The resulting zygote develops into a planktonic planula larva, which eventually undergoes metamorphosis, forming tentacles, septa, and a pharynx before settling on the aboral end. Divers encountering Astreopora randalli may observe its role in the reef ecosystem, providing habitat and contributing to the structural integrity of the reef. However, it is important to note that this species is currently listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Conservation efforts are crucial to ensure the survival of this coral species and the rich biodiversity it supports.
