Mediterranean Mermaid's Glove
Axinella verrucosa
Mediterranean Mermaid's Glove is a sponge species known for its unique appearance and presence in the Mediterranean Sea. It can grow up to 1 meter in height and is characterized by cylindrical branches that lack protuberances. The sponge typically exhibits a yellow to orange coloration, although it can occasionally appear pink. This species is sessile and often found in environments with dynamic water mixing, such as hard substrates and caves beneath the sea surface. This sponge thrives in subtropical waters and is commonly found at depths shallower than 60 meters, with the majority of occurrences being recorded above 40 meters. Its biological structure includes choanocytes, which allow it to generate strong water currents, facilitating its filter-feeding behavior. The Mediterranean Mermaid's Glove is hermaphroditic, with a life cycle that includes a free-swimming larval stage known as parenchymella before settling down to grow into a mature sponge. While diving, encountering this sponge can be an interesting experience as it often inhabits areas with less water movement, providing a contrast to the dynamic environments it generally prefers. Its conservation status has not been evaluated, and there are no specific threats to humans associated with this species.
