Gaudy Babakina

Babakina anadoni

Babakina anadoni is a multicoloured sea slug that can grow up to 2 cm in length. Its body features a purple ground color, complemented by contrasting shades of purple and other colors, including blue, white, yellow, and pink on its chemosensory organs and cerata. This distinctive coloration helps divers identify it among other nudibranchs. It inhabits warm Atlantic waters, with a distribution that includes the west coast of Spain, the Canary Islands, Portugal, and occasionally southern France. It has also been recorded in the western Atlantic, including The Bahamas and the coast of Brazil, as well as temperate waters, with sightings reported off the Isles of Scilly and in a rock pool at Falmouth, Cornwall in May 2023. As a simultaneous hermaphrodite, Babakina anadoni engages in unique mating behaviors where individuals may alternate roles during reproduction. Eggs are deposited on a substratum, developing into planktonic larvae before maturing into adults. Encountering this species while diving can be a rewarding experience, as they can often be found on rocky substrates or in tide pools. Their presence at various dive sites suggests they are relatively accessible for divers seeking to observe diverse marine life. Currently, the conservation status of Babakina anadoni is not evaluated by the IUCN, indicating that more research may be needed to understand its population dynamics and ecological role.
