Hairy Ark

Barbatia barbata

Barbatia barbata is a species of ark clam characterized by its oblong and flattened shell, which can reach sizes between 35 to 100 millimeters. The shell's surface is covered with a distinctive hairy dark periostracum, except for the apical part, making it easily identifiable among similar species. This clam is typically found along the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea, particularly in regions such as Greece, Italy, and Tunisia. It inhabits rocky or coralligenous seabeds, often at depths ranging from 125 to 200 meters, although most occurrences are shallower than 40 meters. As a benthic organism, Barbatia barbata feeds by filtering particles from the water, likely consuming plankton and organic matter. The species is gonochoric, meaning individuals are either male or female, and they reproduce by releasing eggs and sperm into the water column, where fertilization occurs. The early life cycle includes free-swimming larvae that eventually settle to the seabed. Diving encounters with the Hairy Ark can reveal these clams nestled among rocky substrates, where their unique shell texture and coloration can be observed. Divers should approach gently to avoid disturbing their habitat. The conservation status of Barbatia barbata has not been evaluated, but it is commonly found in suitable environments.
