Palebar Hogfish

Bodianus atrolumbus

The Palebar Hogfish, Bodianus atrolumbus, is a tropical reef fish found in the Western Indian Ocean, particularly between the Mascarene Islands and the coast of Southeast Africa. It inhabits deeper rock and coral reefs, where it can often be seen swimming among other marine life. This species can grow up to 30.7 cm in length. It is characterized by its fusiform, compressed body and a distinctive color pattern that includes a central white bar in juveniles, which narrows to a spindle-shaped mark as they mature. The Palebar Hogfish is often confused with its relative, Bodianus perditio, but can be distinguished by its more pronounced yellow or golden hues and the specific pattern of its white markings. It has a smoothly curved lateral line and a set of well-developed labial flaps. The mouth is slightly oblique, with interdigitating canine teeth that are adapted for its diet. This species primarily feeds on sea urchins, crabs, and gastropod mollusks, using its powerful pharyngeal plates to crush these hard-shelled invertebrates.
