Island Hogfish
Bodianus insularis
The island hogfish (Bodianus insularis) is a species of wrasse in the family Labridae found in the eastern Atlantic Ocean. Adults reach about 35 cm with a robust body displaying reddish to pinkish coloration. This species is restricted to islands associated with the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, including St. Helena, Ascension Island, and surrounding seamounts. It inhabits rocky reefs and reef slopes at depths of 5-50 meters. Island hogfish feed on benthic invertebrates including sea urchins, crustaceans, and mollusks. Their geographic isolation has led to their evolution as a distinct species from related Bodianus hogfishes. Due to the remoteness of their habitat, they are rarely encountered by recreational divers, making any sighting noteworthy. The species name 'insularis' reflects their island-restricted distribution.
