Barred Hogfish

Bodianus scrofa

The Barred Hogfish is a wrasse species inhabiting the eastern Atlantic Ocean, particularly near the Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands, and Cape Verde. Divers can find this fish on rocky reefs, where it resides at depths between 20 and 200 meters. While it can reach a maximum length of 51 cm, most individuals are closer to 30 cm. The fish has a streamlined, fusiform body shape typical of wrasses, allowing it to navigate efficiently through its reef environment. Reproduction in the Barred Hogfish involves egg-laying, with distinct pairs forming during the breeding period. Although it holds minor commercial value, it is sometimes available fresh in local markets. Divers are likely to encounter this species in shallower waters, as many sightings occur at depths less than 40 meters. Listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, the Barred Hogfish is harmless to humans. When diving, this solitary fish can be observed moving gracefully among the rocky structures of its habitat, providing an interesting sight for underwater enthusiasts.
