Black Sole

Brachirus niger

The Black Sole, scientifically known as Brachirus niger, is a bottom-dwelling fish found in the subtropical waters of the Southwest Pacific, particularly along the eastern coast of Australia. It prefers habitats with muddy substrates, such as coastal rivers, estuaries, and shallow inshore waters. This species can be identified by its dark or light brown upper side, which features large dark brown cirri, and its nearly black pectoral fin. The underside is a creamy white with some brownish pigmentation on the fins, and the edges of the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins have a thin white margin. Divers are likely to encounter the Black Sole at depths less than 40 meters, as most observations are recorded within this range. The species can reach a length of up to 35 cm. Although its flesh is considered to be of high quality, it is not extensively targeted by commercial fisheries. The IUCN Red List categorizes the Black Sole as Least Concern. Divers spotting this fish may notice its excellent camouflage abilities, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the muddy bottom, making it a rewarding find for those who observe it.
