Braun's Pughead Pipefish

Bulbonaricus brauni

Braun's Pughead Pipefish is a small marine fish belonging to the family Syngnathidae, with a maximum length of 5.5 cm. It has an eel-like body and undergoes a transformation where it loses its dorsal fin, pectoral fins, and elongate snout as it matures to its bottom-dwelling stage. This species is primarily found in the Eastern Indian Ocean, ranging from Indonesia to Western Australia, and possibly in the Western Central Pacific near Palau. It resides in coral reef environments, particularly favoring depths between 1 and 10 meters, often in association with Galaxea coral. The species reproduces through an ovoviviparous process, where males carry the eggs in a brood pouch located under their tail until they hatch. This method of reproduction is typical among pipefish. Divers may encounter Braun's Pughead Pipefish hidden among corals, where its ability to blend into the environment makes it a challenge to detect. The IUCN has assessed Braun's Pughead Pipefish as Least Concern. However, its reliance on coral habitats means it could be affected by coral reef degradation. Its presence has been recorded in various locations within its range.
