Big Blue Octopus
Callistoctopus macropus
The big blue octopus (Callistoctopus macropus), also known as the white-spotted octopus, is a medium-sized octopus with an arm span reaching about 150 cm found in the Mediterranean and tropical Indo-Pacific. Despite the common name 'big blue,' it is typically reddish-brown to maroon covered with distinctive white spots. It is nocturnal, emerging at night to hunt small crustaceans and mollusks on sandy and rocky substrate. During the day it hides in crevices, under rocks, or in empty shells. It is commonly encountered on night dives in the Mediterranean, where it is one of the most frequently seen octopus species. Its striking spotted pattern and approachable nature make it a popular photography subject.
