Callyspongia joubini

Callyspongia joubini is a sessile sponge species found in tropical waters, specifically in the Western Central Pacific region, with confirmed occurrences in Indonesia. This sponge belongs to the family Callyspongiidae and the order Haplosclerida. It is a member of the class Demospongiae, which are known for their hermaphroditic nature. The life cycle of Callyspongia joubini begins with a zygote that develops into a free-swimming parenchymella larva. This larva eventually settles on a suitable substrate, where it grows into a mature sponge. Divers might encounter Callyspongia joubini at various dive sites. An encounter with this sponge during a dive would reveal its stationary nature, firmly attached to the substrate it inhabits. Currently, Callyspongia joubini has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, CITES, or CMS for its conservation status. However, it is considered harmless to humans and does not pose any known threat.
