Resplendent Pygmy Angelfish
Centropyge resplendens
The resplendent pygmy angelfish (Centropyge resplendens) is a small, vividly colored marine angelfish in the family Pomacanthidae. Adults reach only about 6 cm in length. They display a stunning bright blue body with brilliant orange-yellow areas on the head, dorsal region, and fins. This species is endemic to Ascension Island in the remote mid-Atlantic Ocean, making it one of the rarest angelfish in the world. It inhabits rocky and coral reef areas at depths of 15-40 meters, where it feeds primarily on algae, detritus, and small invertebrates. The resplendent pygmy angelfish is typically solitary or found in small harems with one dominant male and several females. Like other Centropyge species, they are protogynous hermaphrodites. Their extreme rarity and limited range, combined with their dazzling coloration, make them one of the most sought-after sightings for dedicated fish-watching divers.
