Rapanui Butterflyfish

Chaetodon litus

The Rapanui butterflyfish (Chaetodon litus), also known as the Easter Island butterflyfish, is a small reef fish reaching up to 15 cm. It has a pale grey to white body with a black eye bar, yellowish fins, and a distinctive black spot near the rear dorsal area. Endemic to the seas around Easter Island, approximately 3,500 km off the coast of mainland Chile, it inhabits brown algae-covered volcanic boulders at depths of 1 to 25 meters. This species feeds on worms, crustaceans, barnacles, and other benthic invertebrates. As one of the most geographically restricted butterflyfish in the world, finding this species is a unique privilege reserved for divers visiting the remote island. Its subtle beauty and extreme rarity make it a prized sighting for fish enthusiasts and underwater photographers.
