It can grow up to 50 cm in length and is recognized for its fusiform body shape. This species is typically found on shallow fringing reefs, particularly in areas with dead coral and rubble, where it forms small groups. Divers can encounter the Captain Parrotfish at depths ranging from 1 to 7 meters. It is a non-migratory species that feeds primarily on benthic algae, playing an important role in the reef ecosystem by grazing on algae. They are harmless to humans and are often caught using nets and other artisanal fishing gear, mainly sold fresh in local markets.
