Graphic Tuskfish

Choerodon graphicus

The Graphic Tuskfish is a reef-associated species found in the tropical waters of the Western Pacific, from the Philippines to Queensland, Australia, and New Caledonia. This fish can reach a maximum length of 51.5 cm and is characterized by its body adorned with 5 to 7 broad dusky bands. A notable feature is the distinct dark spot on its lateral line, positioned below the fifth or sixth dorsal-fin spine. The fish has a short and deep oval body shape, with dorsal spines totaling 13 and dorsal soft rays numbering 7. Typically inhabiting lagoon and seaward reefs, the Graphic Tuskfish is usually found on rubble and sand bottoms at depths greater than 20 meters. It is solitary in nature and primarily feeds on hard-shelled prey such as crustaceans, mollusks, and sea urchins. The species is oviparous, with distinct pairing during breeding, which is a behavior divers might observe. Divers encountering the Graphic Tuskfish will find it relatively common and easily approachable, making it a frequent sight during dives. The IUCN lists this species as Least Concern.
