Green Chromis

Chromis cinerascens

The Green Chromis, also known as Chromis cinerascens, is a small damselfish found predominantly in the Indo-West Pacific region. This species inhabits coral reefs across a range of locations including Sri Lanka, the Maldives, the Andaman Sea, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and northwestern Australia. Divers can spot these fish at depths ranging from 3 to 15 meters, where they exhibit a fusiform body shape with a normal cross-section. Green Chromis are diurnal and are known for their oviparous breeding behavior. During the breeding season, distinct pairs form, and the males play an active role in guarding and aerating the eggs, which are demersal and adhere to the substrate. This species is harmless to humans and does not present any significant threat. When diving in their habitat, divers might encounter these fish actively swimming among the coral reefs. They are not migratory, making them a consistent presence in their preferred environments. The Green Chromis is currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.
