Plebeian Clanculus

Clanculus plebejus

Clanculus plebejus is a small sea snail with a shell size ranging from 6 mm to 11 mm. The shell is depressed and umbilicate, displaying a color palette of pinkish brown, gray, or yellow. Its surface features ribs adorned with black and white dots, which can form distinct radiating lines above and a zigzag pattern beneath. The spire is low-conic with an acute apex and about five coarsely lirate whorls. The body whorl is obtusely angular at the periphery, and the upper surface is encircled by four coarse lirae. The convex base is sculptured with numerous smooth striae, while the aperture is rounded and oblique with thickened margins.  This species is endemic to Australia, found in regions such as New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia, typically inhabiting shallow waters. It is recorded at depths shallower than 40 meters, with 90% of occurrences at depths less than 10 meters.  Encountering this species while diving may involve spotting it on rocky substrates or reefs, where it can be observed grazing on algae or other organic matter.
