Clibanarius signatus
Clibanarius signatus is a hermit crab species belonging to the family Diogenidae, commonly found in the Western Indian Ocean. These crabs are benthic and thrive in tropical climates, often populating gravel and rocky shores. Occasionally, they can also be found on sandy shores. Divers may encounter these crabs scuttling along the ocean floor, using their borrowed shells for protection and mobility. The species is part of the order Decapoda, known for its members' gonochoric nature, meaning individuals are distinctly male or female. Clibanarius signatus engages in a precopulatory courtship ritual, utilizing olfactory and tactile cues. This behavior is typical among decapods, where indirect sperm transfer is the norm. Divers observing Clibanarius signatus can expect a harmless encounter, as these creatures pose no threat to humans. However, they are noted to be abundant in their preferred habitats.
