Bay Shrimp
Crangon nigromaculata
Bay shrimp, belonging to the family Crangonidae, are small crustaceans found in the Eastern Pacific region. They are benthic creatures, meaning they inhabit the bottom of their aquatic environments. These shrimp are typically found in shallower waters, with 78% of recorded occurrences being at depths less than 40 meters, and 90% shallower than 70 meters. In terms of behavior, Bay shrimp engage in a precopulatory courtship ritual that involves olfactory and tactile cues, which is common among members of the order Decapoda. They usually exhibit indirect sperm transfer. Divers encountering Bay shrimp may find them in environments such as sandy or muddy bottoms. These shrimp have not been evaluated for conservation status by the IUCN, CITES, or CMS.
