Common Sunstar
Crossaster papposus
The common sunstar (Crossaster papposus) is a large, spectacular starfish with 8-16 arms (typically 10-12), reaching up to 34 cm across. It is found in the North Atlantic and North Pacific on rocky substrates from the low intertidal to about 300 m. Its upper surface displays a striking concentric ring pattern in red, orange, pink, and white, with each arm having bands of contrasting color. It is a voracious predator of other starfish, sea cucumbers, and sea anemones, and is notably a predator of the common starfish. Its multi-armed, sun-like shape and vivid patterning make it one of the most photogenic invertebrates in temperate waters.
