Butterfly King Crab

Cryptolithodes typicus

The Butterfly King Crab, known scientifically as Cryptolithodes typicus, is a unique crustacean found along the northeastern Pacific coast, from Alaska to California. This crab is easily recognizable by its broad, butterfly-shaped carapace that provides excellent camouflage against rocky substrates. The carapace color varies significantly within the species, with smaller individuals usually appearing white, while larger ones display a range of colors. The carapace's design also effectively conceals the crab's appendages when viewed from above or the side, adding to its cryptic nature. Inhabiting rocky environments, the Butterfly King Crab is primarily found in subtidal and low intertidal zones, clinging to rocks or hiding in crevices. It can be found at depths ranging from the surface to 73 meters. The species is adapted to temperate waters and is often seen during low tides when it remains attached to the substratum or near seagrass bases. The conservation status of this species has not been evaluated, and it poses no known threat to humans.
