Cycloseris explanulata
Cycloseris explanulata is a coral species belonging to the family Fungiidae, found primarily in the Indo-Pacific region. This coral is typically associated with reef environments, particularly favoring shallow, protected reef areas. It can be encountered at depths ranging from the surface down to 40 meters, although most observations are made at depths shallower than 20 meters. The coral thrives in tropical climates, within a latitudinal range of 30°N to 27°S and a longitudinal range of 32°E to 137°W. As a member of the class Anthozoa, Cycloseris explanulata exhibits reproductive behaviors typical of the group, being either gonochoric or hermaphroditic. The mature gametes are released into the coelenteron and subsequently spawned through the mouth. The life cycle involves the development of a planktonic planula larva, which undergoes metamorphosis with the formation of tentacles, septa, and a pharynx before settling on the substrate. Divers encountering this coral can expect to find it in various reef-associated habitats, where it contributes to the complex ecosystem structure. The species is currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.
