Cycloseris fragilis

Cycloseris fragilis is a coral species belonging to the family Fungiidae, commonly found in the Pacific Ocean. This coral is associated with reef environments and can be found at depths ranging from the surface to 400 meters. However, the majority of recorded sightings occur at shallower depths, with 63% of observations being at depths less than 40 meters, and 90% at depths less than 90 meters. This makes it accessible to divers exploring reef areas. The life cycle of Cycloseris fragilis involves the release of mature gametes into the coelenteron, which are then spawned through the mouth. The resulting zygote develops into a planktonic planula larva. As it matures, the larva undergoes metamorphosis, developing tentacles, septa, and a pharynx before settling on the aboral end. This species can be either gonochoric or hermaphroditic, a common trait among members of the class Anthozoa. Cycloseris fragilis is categorized as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List. Divers encountering this coral can observe its solitary nature, as it does not form colonies like some other coral species. Its presence in tropical reef environments adds to the biodiversity that divers can experience in these underwater ecosystems.
