Cycloseris wellsi

Cycloseris wellsi is a coral species belonging to the family Fungiidae, commonly found in the Indo-West Pacific region. It inhabits reef-associated environments, thriving at depths ranging from the surface down to 40 meters. This coral is typically found in tropical climates between 36°N and 30°S latitude. Divers might encounter this species in various reef habitats, where it contributes to the complex ecosystem structure. The reproductive strategy of Cycloseris wellsi involves the release of mature gametes into the coelenteron, which are then spawned through the mouth. The resulting zygote develops into a planktonic planula larva. As the larva matures, it undergoes metamorphosis, developing tentacles, septa, and a pharynx before settling on the substrate. Cycloseris wellsi is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List. This coral species is included in Appendix II of CITES, meaning that its international trade is monitored to ensure sustainability.
