Cymodoce truncata
Cymodoce truncata is a small crustacean belonging to the order Isopoda, specifically within the family Sphaeromatidae. It is primarily found in the Mediterranean Sea, inhabiting benthic environments. This species is known to reach a maximum length of 1.6 cm, with males and unsexed individuals typically reaching this size. Divers may encounter this species in subtropical regions, often at depths less than 70 meters, as the majority of recorded sightings occur in shallower waters. Although there is no specific common name for this species, its presence has been recorded near various dive sites. Cymodoce truncata has a unique reproductive strategy typical of isopods, where mating occurs before and sometimes during the parturial molt. The species exhibits indirect sperm transfer, and the eggs are brooded in a specialized structure known as the marsupium. After hatching, the young emerge as manca postlarvae before maturing into adults. Divers observing Cymodoce truncata may find it intriguing due to its small size and benthic lifestyle. Currently, there is no evaluation of its conservation status by the IUCN.
