Dusky Morwong
Dactylophora nigricans
The dusky morwong (Dactylophora nigricans) is a distinctive temperate reef fish reaching up to 70 cm. It has a deep body with bold dark brown to black vertical bars on a lighter background, thick lips, and characteristically elongated lower pectoral fin rays. Found in the temperate waters of southern Australia from Western Australia to New South Wales, it inhabits rocky reefs, kelp forests, and sponge gardens at depths of 5 to 40 meters. This species feeds on small invertebrates and algae, using its thick lips to graze on reef surfaces. It is often seen in pairs or small groups cruising through kelp-draped rocky reefs. Its striking banding pattern and bold profile make it an attractive subject for underwater photographers exploring the rich temperate reefs of southern Australia.
