Silver Porgy
Diplodus caudimacula
The Silver Porgy, known scientifically as Diplodus caudimacula, is a reef-associated fish found in the tropical waters of the Western Central Atlantic. This species inhabits regions such as southeast Florida, the West Indies, and the southern shores of the Caribbean Sea. Divers can often spot them in shallow coastal waters, particularly in areas with clear water and rocky or coral bottoms. They are known to reach a maximum length of 30 cm, although more commonly they are found around 22 cm in length. Silver Porgies are primarily herbivorous, feeding on algae, but they also consume mollusks and crabs. Juveniles of this species often form aggregations, which can be a common sight for divers exploring their habitats. Encounters with Silver Porgies during dives are generally safe as they are harmless to humans. They are not a major target for fisheries, being of minor commercial interest. The conservation status of the Silver Porgy has not been evaluated by the IUCN.
