Discophyton rudyi

Discophyton rudyi is a coral species belonging to the family Discophytidae, commonly found in the Eastern Pacific regions of the USA and Canada. This species is sessile, meaning it remains fixed in one place, typically on the undersurface of rocks in low intertidal and shallow subtidal areas. Occasionally, it can also be found on decorator crabs. Its maximum height reaches up to 2.5 cm, which refers to the polyp height. As a member of the class Anthozoa, its life cycle includes the development of a planktonic planula larva, which undergoes metamorphosis before settling on the aboral end. Tentacles, septa, and pharynx begin to form during this process. Divers encountering Discophyton rudyi may find it in subtropical climates, often in areas where rocks provide a suitable surface for attachment. The species does not have a known common name and is not evaluated for conservation status by the IUCN, CITES, or CMS. It poses no threat to humans and does not have any recorded human uses. Observations of this species have been recorded near DiveSight locations.
