Doto floridicola
Doto floridicola is a nudibranch characterized by its translucent white body, which features large red spots covering its ceratal tubercles. The back and sides display an irregular brown-red pigmentation, with some areas around the bases of the cerata and along the foot being bare. This unique appearance aids divers in distinguishing it from other nudibranch species. Initially described from the Azores, this nudibranch has been observed along the UK and continental coastlines, extending southward to Portugal and throughout the Mediterranean Sea, where it thrives in subtropical marine habitats. This species is typically found in demersal zones and primarily feeds on hydroids, specifically Aglaophenia kirchenpaueri. Doto floridicola exhibits simultaneous hermaphroditism, possessing both male and female reproductive organs. During mating, individuals engage in a behavior where they attempt to induce one another to act as male or female, with the dominant individual penetrating the body wall of the other. Diving encounters with Doto floridicola can be captivating, as divers may witness its feeding on hydroids. Although not evaluated by the IUCN, its presence in various dive sites suggests it may be relatively common in suitable environments. Observing this nudibranch adds to the richness of underwater exploration, highlighting the diversity of marine life.
