Hedgehog Coral

Echinopora hirsutissima

Hedgehog Coral, a member of the family Merulinidae, is a reef-associated species found primarily in the Indo-West Pacific region. It thrives in tropical waters at depths ranging from 1 to 38 meters, although most occurrences are recorded at depths shallower than 20 meters. This coral is known for its intricate structure, which provides a habitat for various marine life. The species reproduces through a life cycle typical of Anthozoa class members. Hedgehog Coral can be either gonochoric or hermaphroditic, releasing mature gametes into the coelenteron, which are then spawned through the mouth. The resulting zygote develops into a planktonic planula larva, undergoing metamorphosis with the early development of tentacles, septa, and pharynx before settling on the seafloor. Divers encountering Hedgehog Coral can expect to find it in reef environments, contributing to the rich biodiversity of these ecosystems. The species is currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.
